Purpose and Goals of ​DEITC

Purpose Statement:

The purpose of the Distance Education and ​Instructional Technology Committee (DEITC) is to ​serve as an advisory body to the Provost & VP for ​Academic Affairs and Associate VP of Finance & ​Administration on matters related to the quality of ​online and hybrid courses, instructional ​technologies, and learning opportunities for faculty.

Goals

  • Goal 1: Create, support, and enhance the ​instructional technology activities of the TAMIU ​community.
  • Goal 2: Increase learning opportunities in ​instructional technologies for faculty and ​students.
  • Goal 3: Continue to implement and expand the ​Quality Matters standards in all newly-developed ​online and hybrid courses.
  • Goal 4: Maintain and expand collaborative ​service efforts with regional school districts and ​institutions of higher education.
  • Goal 5: Promote, recognize, and reward ​excellence among faculty integrating ​technology.

New eLearning ​Website

We are excited to announce the eLearning website ​has a new look! Faculty can navigate the new ​faculty support page & see the resources available ​to them. All DEITC information and past newsletters ​are also available in Blackboard Ultra under the ​organizations page on the new website.

Updates on Blackboard ​Deployment

The Blackboard Ultra full deployment took effect ​Summer 2024. The eLearning team continues to ​provide Blackboard Ultra trainings to faculty. Register ​for a Blackboard Ultra workshop today through the OIT ​Trainings website.

Blackboard Ultra ​Professor Testimonies

The TAMIU faculty and students have responded well ​to the Ultra transition. To highlight the positive Ultra ​experience, the eLearning team has gotten faculty ​together for a series of testimonials. This video series ​will be displayed on our eLearning website, LinkedIn ​& on our social media pages.

OER Updates from ​the Library

William Crowell mentioned that the library will be hosting a ​Fall 2024 Learning Series which will be available to all ​faculty. If you are interested in registering for future ​sessions, please reach out to Joanna@iskme.org. Please see ​below for upcoming dates:

  • OER Adoption- Thursday, October 3, 2-2:30pm.
  • OER Creation- Thursday October 17, 2:3:30pm.

The OER mini-grant funds are still available. The grant will ​be closing in Summer 2025

  • OER adoption funding- $2000
  • OER adapting funding- $3000
  • OER Create/Authoring funding- $5000

Some TAMIU faculty members attended the Open Texas ​Online Conference 2024 from September 25-27, 2024. The ​details of the conference will be posted here ​https://www.opentexas.org/open-texas-2024 for future ​reference. More information on OERs ​https://oertx.highered.texas.gov/.

Open Texas OER Fellowship - Dr. Joan Wakasa Murumba ​was a successful applicant among the ten (10) OER ​founding fellows/mentees for Cohort 1 2024-2025. The ​fellowship kicked off on 9/25/24 and will be ending in June ​2025 with a capstone OER project. Knowledge gathered ​during this Programme will be shared with TAMIU ​community for building an OER culture which is now a ​statewide and system wide initiative.


Technology is a fantastic resource for study tools!

New PROF Center ​Website

Dr. Ariadne Gonzalez announced the launch of their ​new website. The main focus of the new look is the ​scheduled workshops tab. Their main goal is to be a ​one stop hub for all workshops and trainings given ​by the PROF Center, THCB, eLearning, the library, ​and NCFDD to make accessing trainings for faculty ​more efficient.

QM Development Stipend

Dr. Kazen shared a reminder that the new course ​development stipends took effect on September 1, ​2024. The following stipends have been approved for ​QM certification:

  1. New Course Developments: $3,000
  2. Redevelopment/Recertification: $1,500

Digital Symposium

Dr. Cynthia Sosa mentioned that the Blackboard ​Anthology Digital Teaching Symposium will be taking ​place November 11th. Anyone interested can register: ​https://www.anthology.com/digital-teaching-​symposium
